MADHESI INTERNATIONAL

INTRODUCTION TO THE ORGANISATION

A "madhesi", the term which some may not be familiar of, is a person from lowlands (Terai) of Nepal, who is of Indian-origin orientations and racial roots. Madhesis number roughly 11 million, half of the entire Nepalese population.

It is a very bitter and a widely known sad fact that madhesis have been discriminated flagarantly over decades, both institutionally and socialy by the pahadi supremacist and their repesentatives in the "institutionally-ethinically-guarded" governments in Nepal that have followed since her inception. The very "founder" of the country, P.N.Shah advocated debarring madhesis from palace and its affairs in his book,"Dibyopdesh". The discrimination is so stinking that we pay tax but are denied from joining the "national" army, which shamelessly an exclusive pahadis only club. This is violation of basic citizen rights. Less than 5% in police and even less in civil service are held by madhesi despite their numbers, which is even doctored in consensus to suit the planning commision to keep te pahadi supremacist grip tight over insruments of the state. Our literacy rate and per capita income fell over years despite feeding entire Nepal and generating our own sources of employment, as a plain result.

We are thought as foreigners in our own soil and treated as lowly colonial subjects as if we sneaked into Nepal illegaly, while the fact is unrelenting migration from pahad to terai is so plain to notice. Approximately 3 millions of us have been denied our rights to our soil by the biased governement disallowing the rights to citizenship. A "pahadi-faced" foreigner is immedietly considered a "true" Nepali, while madhesis, no matter how many centuries they could have lived in Terai, are never taken as genuine nationals. The constitution is biased in context of citizenship. By article 9.4.a, only those can acquire Nepali citizenship if they know Khas-Nepali language written in Devangiri script. The same opportunity is not provided to any one knowing any of the other 100 native languages of the country. Article 8 of the Constitution limits birthright citizenship to the year BS 2019 (1962 A.D.). Because of the later, those who were born before that period but had not taken citizenship at that time are denied citizenship. The high-level citizenship committee constituted under parliamentarian Dhanpati Upadhaya in 2052 estimated 3.4 millions Nepalis older than 16 years without citizenship. Madhesis born of land less and illiterate ancestors are affected by this provision systematically. Besides, there is strong propoganda from pahadi bigots that should the citizenships be granted, the "indians" (read madhesis) will swallow Nepal. While the fact is that the phenomenal migration of Pahadis into India is for anyone to notice. You can find pahadis from Kashmir to Kanyakumari in India in bunch. They enjoy far better rights that we madhesis do.

Because the state has denied us our rights, majority madhesis are not empowered in any of the ways, politically or socially. The day we step through Churiya range, we are bad mouthed, made blistering attacks upon, criticized like an outcast, deprecated like unworthies, derided, derogated, discredited as traitors, hit physically, ripped emotionally, scoffed at terminally, scorched as dishonest, scorned as lowly scum, smeared and sneered racially using the words "Dhoti", "Marsya", "Ghyagar" etc. "Madhesi" is quotes as "Madishe", which is equivalent to calling a coloured gentleman, a "nigger", by national dailies and state TV. Comedians in Kathmandu have their staple line: "Manche haina Madhise ho" (not man, just a madhesi), and is quite common in pahadi belt. The treatmeant is so blood-boiling that we got beaten, looted and vadalised just because Hritik Roshan, an Indian actor, presumably said he hated Nepalese. Even if he had, why madhesis should have faced the brunt?

Enough!! Enough is enough!!
Madhesis need to rise.

Madhesi International is a platform for madhesis to fight for their due rights and dignity in Nepal. Madhesi movement is already in offing in various forms and through various organisations. However, they are scattered and disoriented despite their same goal for the average madhesis. Madhesi International envisages to align the movement and surge it forward with force. It represents the fight against pahadi-supremacist opression and institutionalised marginalisation in Nepal. We will give befitting reply to the pahadi bigotry and discrimination against us. We need to teach the bigots what is called mutual respect and equality.

Any revolution is not a luxurious prejudice but an ordinary compulsion erupting from the subjugated domain. We are subjugated and we need to stand up together to say - "NO MORE".

Our Ideology

We base our basic ideology on the following baseline: EQUALITY AND DIGNITY for madhesis as equal citizens of Nepal. It is a real shame that we have kept quite despite being discriminated and abused for hundreds of years. To live like a second class citizen in our own soil (madhesh) and be treated with such an indignity and impunity by pahadi supremacists and yet to wait with patience that one day things will get better, is a blot of our past. It must be cleaned at all cost.

I ask you, my brothers and sisters, IS EQUALITY AND DIGNITY A LOT TO ASK? History will never forgive us if we still keep spectating meekly and suffer the boots of pahadi supremacism. If you believe you are true sons and daughters of madhesh, stand up, hold your fist high and say - "HUM MADHESI, HAMAR MADHESH" and plead to fight - fight for our right.

Any individual sympethising with our quest for "equality and dignity" is our friend and our source of inspiration regardless of his/her race, colour, caste or creed.

Feature of our organisation

Madhesi International aims for equality and dignity for madhesis in Nepal. Anyone, who thinks we deserve them as our due right, can be our member. Our memebrs spread across continents. Precisely, Madhesis in United States, UK, India and Nepal came up with the idea of such an umbrella organisation to align madheshi movement. We believe in "Gandhian" philosophy of revolution. The list is being compiled and anyone wishing to join can go to the relevant page.

Paramendra Bhagat, who is based in USA at the moment, is the founding president and our able and gifted leader. The executive members will be formed with due procedure in course. Meanwhile, few of us are actively shaping the organisation. Our active members represent all sections and levels of madhesis.

The site is under active construction. Apologies for inconvinience.
